The simplest definition of a bed rail is that it is located between the foot of your bed and the head of your bed. Bed rails as in those found on hospital beds do not need a headboard or a foot board to be installed. Some bed rails as in babies cribs come already installed. Bed rails are made of many different materials; the most often used material for is a light metal like aluminum for rods or light maple or birch for wooden slats. These rods or slats are joined to each other like a small fence and put on both sides of the bed to keep the person occupying the bed from rolling over and onto the floor and possibly hurting himself.
Some can be connected to the foot board and to the headboard. These rails can be hooked on or bolted on to the headboard and to the foot board. It is obvious, of course, that if you are using metal ones, you will need to use a bolt to fasten. If you are using wooden ones, you will need a hook to attach it to the top and bottom of the bed.
There are other types of rails used on the bottom metal springs holding your mattress that can be used to adjust your beds height and to add additional control of your mattresses. Many bedding stores also sell bed rails that allow for beds to use a larger mattress without having to buy a new bed. With your bed rail attachments you can keep full size head and foot boards and use a queen size mattress. Bed rails are basically a bed accessory that adds comfort and safety to your sleeping time. These rails can be hooked on or bolted on and can be ordered with a center brace for additional support or used alone. By way of bed accessories, bed rails let you fix your bed to insure that you are safely supported and protected from falls, drops, or other possible injuries while sleeping.
Your bed comes with a headboard and a frame. It is the frame that a bed rail will assist in keeping your sleeping healthy and safe. If you are overweight, there are bed rails available that can add support to your bed’s frame to keep your mattresses from sagging. If you taller than most bed frames, there are rails that can be hooked or bolted on to your bed frame to adjust to your size.
Bed rails can be ordered online or at a bedding store. Whether you choose hospital like side rails or corner posts and bottom rails, your choice will depend on what type of bed you have, who will be sleeping in it, your preference in material of the product, and how much you are willing to pay for your bed’s accessories. Some bed’s like hospital beds for in home invalids or babies cribs and playpens come with bed rails installed. Still, you should check to see that you know how to lift and lower your bed’s rails.
